Public Art
Public art has become an important part of Battle Lake’s identity, reflecting the community’s creativity, sense of place, and commitment to a vibrant downtown. While Battle Lake has long supported local artists and cultural events, the intentional development of public art gained momentum in the early 2000s as part of broader downtown revitalization and placemaking efforts.
Art of the Lakes, a local nonprofit dedicated to supporting artists and expanding access to the arts. Through exhibitions, classes, studio tours, and community collaborations, Art of the Lakes helped lay the foundation for integrating art into everyday public spaces. As the organization grew, so did opportunities for permanent and temporary public art throughout the community. The City's Art Advisory Committee is responsible for several of the public art projects in recent years and have received grant funding to pay for a majority of the projects.
Over time, sculptures, murals, mosaics, and artistic streetscape elements were added to downtown and surrounding areas. Many of the art projects were done with the help of community members. These installations were designed not only to beautify public spaces, but also to invite people to slow down, explore, and connect with Battle Lake’s unique character. Public art became a tool for economic vitality, drawing visitors, supporting local businesses, and reinforcing downtown as a cultural destination. One of the most recognizable public art landmarks is Rusty the Fish, a large metal fish sculpture installed in 2015 in what is often referred to as Art Alley or Art Stream. Created by artist Sue Seeger, the sculpture symbolizes Battle Lake’s connection to water, nature, and creative expression, and has become a favorite photo spot for residents and visitors alike.
Today, public art in Battle Lake continues to evolve through partnerships between artists, volunteers, organizations, and the City. Together, these efforts ensure that art remains visible, accessible, and woven into the fabric of daily life—celebrating Battle Lake’s past while inspiring its future.
